Mac Battery Not Charging? Check These First

Start with the power source and the status message, then separate a normal charging pause from a hardware problem.

If your Mac battery says “Not Charging,” connect the power adapter directly to the Mac and a working wall outlet, then check its wattage and cable. A Mac can intentionally pause charging to protect battery health, or charge slowly when the adapter supplies less power than the Mac needs. If the cable, adapter or port is damaged, hot or smells burnt, stop using it and arrange service.

“Not Charging” does not always mean a failed battery. macOS can pause charging near full capacity, while an underpowered adapter may only hold the current percentage during demanding work. Check the physical power path first, then the battery information macOS reports.

1. Check the outlet, adapter and cable

Plug the adapter straight into a wall outlet and connect it directly to the Mac. Reseat both ends of the cable and look for debris in the port. If possible, test a known-good Apple or compatible power adapter and cable with the correct connector. Do not keep using accessories that are frayed, bent, unusually hot, discoloured or damaged. Apple advises stopping use of damaged power equipment and having it serviced.

2. Compare adapter power with what the Mac is doing

A low-watt adapter can charge a sleeping or lightly used Mac slowly, yet fail to raise the battery level while you are running a display, a game, video export or other heavy workload. Disconnect nonessential accessories, close demanding apps and let the Mac charge for a while. Use an adapter rated for your Mac model; Apple publishes the supported power-adapter limits by model. A higher-watt compatible adapter is not a reason to assume every cable or hub can carry that power.

3. Read the battery status before changing settings

Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and review the status and Battery Health details. On current Macs, battery health management or Optimised Battery Charging can delay a charge near full capacity based on usage patterns. That is different from a Mac which cannot take power at all. Let the Mac remain connected if the status indicates a temporary pause, rather than repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting it.

4. Restart an Apple silicon Mac

If the cable and adapter are sound but the status does not update, restart the Mac from the Apple menu, then test the charger again. Current Apple guidance for Apple silicon focuses on ordinary restart and hardware checks. Avoid copying old Intel-only SMC reset recipes to a newer Mac: they do not describe the same architecture.

5. Know when to seek service

If the battery does not charge with a known-good compatible adapter, the Mac shows a service recommendation, or the connector becomes excessively hot, contact Apple or an authorised service provider. Stop using any swollen battery or damaged charging accessory.

Where Tegaro helps

Tegaro Power shows the battery, connected-adapter wattage, temperature, cycle count and macOS battery condition in its menu-bar readout. It helps you compare what the Mac sees before and after changing a cable or charger; it does not repair a battery, override macOS charging protection or diagnose hardware. For long plugged-in sessions with an external display, see our MacBook clamshell guide.

Safety first

Do not use a charger, cable or port that is physically damaged, unusually hot or smells burnt. Disconnect it and seek qualified service.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Mac say Not Charging when it is plugged in?

macOS can pause charging near full capacity for battery health, or the adapter may supply less power than the Mac is using. Check Battery settings, adapter wattage and the cable before assuming the battery has failed.

Can I use a lower-watt USB-C charger with a MacBook?

It may charge slowly or only while the Mac is idle. Use an adapter rated for your model when you need normal charging, especially with displays or heavy work connected.

Should I reset the SMC when a Mac battery will not charge?

Do not follow old Intel-specific SMC instructions for an Apple silicon Mac. Apple’s current guidance starts with the power connection and an ordinary restart.
