Mac Screenshot Not Working? Fix the Shortcut First

Test the built-in capture tools in a normal app before changing permissions or installing another screenshot utility.

If a Mac screenshot shortcut is not working, press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot and try a capture there. Then check System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots, and confirm the save destination in Screenshot > Options. A blank or blocked capture can also come from an app that restricts recording or from a third-party capture app without the permission it needs.

macOS has built-in tools for a full screen, a window and a selected area. When the familiar shortcut appears to do nothing, find out whether the shortcut, destination, app or permission is responsible before changing system settings.

1. Open Screenshot instead of guessing the shortcut

Press Shift + Command + 5. The Screenshot panel should appear and lets you choose a full-screen, window or selected-area capture. Take a test image of the desktop. If that works, the capture service is available and the problem is likely the shortcut you were using or the app you were trying to capture. For a direct clipboard test, hold Control with Shift + Command + 3 or Shift + Command + 4, then paste into Notes.

2. Check the shortcut mapping

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts, then select Screenshots. Make sure the relevant shortcut is enabled and does not conflict with a utility that intercepts the same keys. Test after closing a third-party keyboard or capture tool. Do not rely on a remembered shortcut: some people intentionally change these mappings, and the Screenshot panel is the clearest baseline.

3. Check where the file goes

In the Screenshot panel, choose Options and review Save to. A screenshot can be going to Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Preview or another selected location. If it was saved to Clipboard, no image file appears in Finder; paste it into an app with Command + V. Also confirm that the intended disk has free space and that you can save an ordinary file there.

4. Separate macOS capture from app restrictions

Test an ordinary desktop or Finder window. Some video, banking, remote-desktop or managed-work apps intentionally block screenshots or return a blank image. That is an app or content restriction, not evidence that the Mac shortcut is broken. Respect the restriction rather than searching for a bypass.

5. Review permission for third-party tools

Built-in Screenshot does not need a separate app toggle to capture your desktop. A third-party screenshot app may request Screen & System Audio Recording or Accessibility permission for its own features. Review its entry in System Settings > Privacy & Security, grant only what you intend, then reopen that app. Avoid permission-reset commands: they remove useful choices without identifying the original cause.

Where Tegaro fits

Tegaro Screenshots is a separate local capture workflow for areas, windows and screens, with annotation and redaction tools. Its capture shortcut and permissions are independent of Apple’s built-in Screenshot panel. First verify the native path above; then use Tegaro when you need its editing workflow. For the native shortcuts themselves, see our Mac screenshot guide.

Protect private data

Before sharing any capture, check for notifications, account names, browser tabs and personal information outside the intended area.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Shift-Command-5 not open Screenshot on my Mac?

Check System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots and test after closing apps that use global shortcuts. If the panel still does not appear, restart the Mac and try again.

Where did my screenshot go?

Open Shift-Command-5, choose Options and check Save to. If it is set to Clipboard, paste into an app with Command-V instead of looking for a file.

Why is my screenshot black in one app?

Some protected content and managed apps deliberately block capture. Test Finder or the desktop to tell an app restriction from a general screenshot problem.
