Scrolling Screenshot on Mac: How to Capture a Long Page
The built-in Screenshot tool stops at the edge of the screen. Here is what works for a whole page, and for lists and apps.
macOS’s built-in Screenshot (Shift + Command + 5) captures only what is on screen. For a whole web page, use the browser: Chrome’s DevTools command menu has a full-size screenshot, and Firefox can save the full page. For long lists in any app, Tegaro’s scrolling capture lets you scroll and builds one tall image.
Apple’s screenshot guide describes full-screen, window and selected-portion captures, and screen recording. It does not describe a scrolling mode. A long page, a chat or a settings list needs another method.
Entire web page in the browser
- Chrome: open DevTools, open the Command Menu and run the “Capture full size screenshot” command. It saves the whole page as one image.
- Firefox: use its screenshot tool and choose “Save full page”.
- Safari: File → Export as PDF saves the page as a PDF you can open in Preview.
These work only for web pages. Sticky headers, lazy-loaded images and pop-ups can look different in a full-page render than on screen.
Lists and apps that are not web pages
Chat windows, settings screens, documents and file lists have no browser command. The manual route is to scroll a little, take a screenshot, repeat, and join the images by hand, which takes time and leaves seams. A scrolling-capture tool does the joining.
Where Tegaro fits
Tegaro Screenshots has Scrolling capture for pages and lists longer than the screen. It needs macOS 14 or later.
- Choose Scrolling capture on the capture bar (or press
Sthere), from the menu, or with your own shortcut. No shortcut is set by default; add one in Screenshots → Shortcuts. - Select an area or click a window.
- Scroll it yourself. Tegaro sends no scrolling of its own, so it does not move your content for you.
- A small panel shows the height so far. Press Done to keep the shot, or Cancel to drop it. Esc also keeps it when Accessibility is granted.
Sticky headers and footers appear once rather than at every seam. It stops by itself after 2 minutes or at about 60 megapixels, so for a very long page capture it in parts. The capture overlay does not take focus from your app.
Screenshots needs macOS Screen Recording access to read pixels. Capture and text recognition run on your Mac and nothing is uploaded. Everything is open for 14 days; after that Screenshots is part of Pro.
A long capture can include far more than you meant to show: names, tabs, notifications and messages further down the page. Scroll back through the image before sending it.
